FOCAL POINT
Focal point is not a rehab. It is also not a hotel, a lodge or a hospital. The best way to describe it is as a community of residents who share the common goal of recovery from what are considered as unmanageable lifestyles in their present communities. These residents include but are not restricted to substance abusers.
OUR VISION
Our aim is to assist those who acknowledge they are in need of recovery and who want lasting change in their lives in order to allow them to deal with life on life’s terms and not depend on substances or other crutches in order to cope.
Life is a journey that goes far beyond “the next fix” or how much “clean time” you have. We want the journey to take you to a place where you can feel comfortable in your own skin, whether you are looking at yourself in the mirror or standing up and presenting in front of a board of Directors.
A journey to where you are able to look back and acknowledge the past but smile in expectation of a bright future. Always remembering that it is your journey and you travel it yourself.
In the words of Andre, 28 years old – "I have been in and out of rehabs for most of my life. On many occasions I have been in staff and leadership positions.
I believe that it does not help to cut people off completely from society. They deceive themselves into believing that it is very easy to stay clean, forgetting their past confines and restraints. When returning to society they often relapse within the first week because they are not prepared for the pressure and expectations that family, friends and co-workers place on them.
We want to help to equip people with our accumulated knowledge, skills and a new way of thinking. We believe in a strong family unit that has insight into these problems because they have faced them ourselves.
It is all fine to sit in a rehab learning endless theories on how to attain and maintain sobriety, but using substances is just the outward symptom of the condition of one’s heart. We, who struggle with substance abuse suffer with an incredibly low self-esteem and an inability to feel loved and accepted by others.
We are striving to create an environment where residents will feel accepted and heard and constantly encouraged, and we believe that this is half the battle won. The rest is up to them."
OUR PHILOSOPHY
We would like to see residents take ownership in their lives and in their recovery. We want to be able to provide an environment whereby they can work locally and begin to earn their own keep and pay for the own recovery and support themselves. This helps to rebuild their lost self esteem and gives them a tangible purpose. This plan is in the early stage of development but we have already had offers of some employment from local businesses and farmers for residents who have earned trust and are ready to work.
OUR LOCATION
We are situated in the Eastern Cape town of Steytlerville. This is about 2 hours by car from Port Elizabeth and 80 Kms from Willowmore. There are daily buses from all major cities that stop at Willowmore and we can collect you from there.
WHAT DOES IT COST
We are not a business or a rehab but we do have to pay rent and electricity and buy food and provide an infrastructure. Residents are expected to make a monthly contribution which is set at a very affordable level. Call us for details.
ACTIVITIES
We are situated near to the renowned Baviaan’s Kloof region which is known for hiking, mountain biking, sight seeing, horse riding and all these activities are available.
